Koh Samui with Kids: Beaches, Activities and Tips 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🌴

Our guide to a successful family trip to Koh Samui, whatever the age of your children.

Koh Samui is one of Thailand's most accessible destinations for family travel: direct flights, modern infrastructure, international hospitals, and above all plenty of shallow-water beaches and gentle activities, perfect for keeping little ones and big ones entertained without any stress.

Whether you're travelling with a baby, young children or teenagers, here's our selection of beaches, activities and practical tips for a successful trip.

🏖️ The 5 best beaches for children

Beach Why it's ideal for families
Choeng MonA sheltered bay with shallow, calm water almost all year round — our favourite with young children.
Mae NamA long, quiet beach with few waves, less crowded than Chaweng or Lamai.
BophutCalm water in the morning, and just steps from the lively Fisherman's Village night market in the evening.
LamaiA more laid-back vibe than Chaweng, with plenty of family-friendly beachfront restaurants.
ChawengThe liveliest and best-equipped beach (restaurants, activities, shops right nearby) — handy with teenagers.

🎡 Activity ideas for children

  • Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) — the 12-metre golden statue is impressive for children, and the climb up to the temple is an easy one.
  • The Koh Samui Aquarium — sharks, turtles and tropical fish up close, a welcome cool break in the middle of the day.
  • Hin Lad Waterfall — an easy forest hike to a natural pool where you can take a dip.
  • A snake farm — an educational and fun show, usually a big hit with older children.
  • Meeting the elephants — at an ethical sanctuary (no elephant riding), a memorable family moment.

🛡️ Safety tips for travelling with children

  • ✅ SPF 50 sunscreen, reapplied every 2 hours — the tropical sun is unforgiving, even in the shade.
  • ✅ Regular hydration, especially between 11am and 3pm: offer water often, even if they don't ask for it.
  • ✅ For getting around, choose an air-conditioned van with a child seat over a motorbike taxi or a crowded songthaew.
  • ✅ Always keep your hotel's contact details and an active local SIM card handy just in case.
